§ 01 Overview
Overview
Enzymatically hydrolyzed collagen (2–20 kDa) from bovine, marine, or porcine sources. The most widely consumed peptide product globally, with a growing evidence base for skin elasticity, joint health, and bone density. Distinct from injectable therapeutic peptides; this is an oral supplement category.
Multiple RCTs and meta-analyses. De Miranda et al. 2021 (19 RCTs) showed significant improvement in skin hydration and elasticity. Zhu et al. 2022 supported OA pain reduction. Evidence quality is moderate; many trials industry-funded with small sample sizes.
§ 02 Mechanism
Mechanism of action
Hydrolysis breaks collagen into di- and tripeptides (notably hydroxyproline-glycine and proline-hydroxyproline) that are absorbed intact in the gut. These peptide fragments stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen/hyaluronic acid synthesis via FGF signaling, and accumulate in cartilage tissue to support chondrocyte metabolism.
- 01RCTs show improved skin elasticity and hydration (5–15 g/day, 4–12 weeks)
- 02Meta-analyses support reduced joint pain in osteoarthritis
- 03Generally recognized as safe (GRAS) with excellent tolerability
- 04Affordable, easy to incorporate into diet
